FLORENCE, SC – The top-ranked Armstrong State University women's tennis team and the third-ranked Pirate men claimed 9-0 and 7-2 wins respectively over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25) in Peach Belt Conference action.
Both Patriots tennis teams will return to action on Friday when they travel to Lander University for a 2 p.m. match. The 18th-ranked FMU women fall to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the PBC – both losses to nationally opponents, while the 27th-ranked Francis Marion men drop to 4-3 and 0-2.
The Patriot doubles duo of senior Jannik Roettlingsberger and junior Raul Madrid captured an 8-4 win at the No.2 position and FMU trailed only 2-1 heading into singles play. Roettlingsberger earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No.2 spot, but Armstrong State won the other five matches in straight sets.
FMU senior Richard Ashforth forced a tiebreaker in his opening set, but eventually fell 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, while Madrid lost a close 6-3, 7-5 decision at No.5 singles.
In the women's match, Francis Marion battled tough in the doubles portion, losing by 8-5, 8-6 and 8-4 decisions. The Pirates, who have won 150 consecutive regular-season PBC matches dating back to 2003, swept all six singles matches in straight sets. FMU sophomore Anna Wintrich was edged 6-3, 7-5 at the No.5 position.
