Despite playing through a wintery mix of wind, rain, and snow that forced three delays, the Francis Marion University men's and women's tennis teams both blanked Barton College by 9-0 scores, Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 9) in non-conference action.
Both FMU squads improve to 2-1. The Patriots will play at North Greenville University on Saturday at noon.
The 48th-ranked Patriot men won the three doubles matches by scores of 8-2, 8-3, and 8-4. In singles play, Francis Marion dropped only one set, that at the No.5 position, but sophomore Raul Madrid rallied to win a tie-breaker 10-4 to capture his match.
Junior Richard Ashforth, ranked seventh nationally, improved his career mark to 30-6 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No.1 singles.
The FMU women did not lose a set in defeating the Bulldogs. In fact, the Patriots lost only one game in sweeping the three doubles matches.
In singles play, junior Samantha Koelliker won 6-3, 6-3 at the No.1 spot and freshman Marie Krueger earned a 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 win the No.2 position. In the remaining four singles matches, FMU dropped only one game.
