Box Score SPARTANBURG, SC – Junior center Courtney Wood came off the bench to tally season-highs of 15 points and seven rebounds to power Francis Marion University to a 65-45 road win over Converse College, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19) in the final game of the Courtyard Women's Basketball Classic.
FMU improves to 2-3 and will play host to Elizabeth City State University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Smith University Center. It will be the final pre-Christmas home game for the Patriots.
Sophomore Shaunice Fulmore led Francis Marion with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Wood connected on 7-of-8 field goal attempts and added three blocked shots and four steals. Her point total was three shy of her career high set as a freshman against Allen University.
Senior point guard TeTe Flowers chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.
Kassidy Moorhouse paced Converse (0-2) with 12 points.
FMU accounted for 14 of the game's opening 16 points and the Patriots led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter. Converse countered with a 17-4 spurt to open the second period and trimmed the margin to 25-23.
Fulmore scored on a lay-in and then hit two free throws, while junior forward Briana Burgins added three free throws to comprise a 7-0 FMU run that extended the lead back to 32-23. The Patriots held a 32-26 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, Francis Marion connected on 9-of-16 shots (56.3%) and outscored the Valkyries 22-8. Much like the opening period, the third period began with a 12-2 FMU run.
The Patriots' largest lead came at 64-39 following a bucket by junior Khai Chandler with three minutes remaining.
FMU converted 28 Converse turnovers into 34 points, and the Patriots held a commanding 42-23 rebounding advantage that led to an 18-3 edge in second-chance points.
For the game, Francis Marion connected on 41 percent of its field goal attempts and was 12-of-14 at the foul line. Converse shot 38.1 percent from the field and hit 9-of-14 attempts at the stripe. Behind the three-point arc, the Patriots were 3-of-10 and the Valkyries 4-of-10.
