SPARTANBURG, SC – Johnson C. Smith University used a 15-0 run midway through the game to register a 65-53 win over Francis Marion University, Friday afternoon (Nov. 18) in the opening game of the Courtyard Women's Basketball Classic at Converse College.

Francis Marion (1-3) will face Converse on Saturday at 4 p.m. on the second day of the event. The next home contest for FMU will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Elizabeth City State University.

Anika Jones led JCSU (2-2) with 14 points, six rebounds, six steals, and five assists.

Francis Marion held a 30-26 advantage late in the second quarter when the Golden Bulls scored on a lay-up just before the halftime buzzer.  Johnson C. Smith then scored the first 13 points of the third period to take a 41-30 lead.  A lay-in by Fulmore trimmed the deficit to 45-38 at the end of the quarter. The Patriots made only 3-of-16 third-quarter field goal attempts, while JCSU connected on 8-of-14 shots.

A 6-1 spurt to open the fourth period brought FMU to within 46-44.  Fulmore's fast-break bucket at the 6:45 mark capped the rally.  However, the Golden Bulls gradually pulled away to a commanding 57-47 lead.

To start the game, FMU raced to an early 11-2 lead only to see JCSU respond with a 12-2 spurt to go ahead 14-13.  The Golden Bulls led 16-15 at the end of the opening period.

A 6-0 run by the Patriots in the second period allowed FMU to assume a 29-24 advantage.

Francis Marion shot 36.1 percent from the field, including 1-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc, and the Patriots hit 8-of-13 free throws.  Johnson C. Smith connected on 46.3 percent of its shots, was 1-of-13 from long distance, and 14-of-25 at the foul line.
