Hawks swoop past FMU in second half

Box Score

FLORENCE, SC – Chowan University took advantage of a third-quarter Francis Marion University scoring drought and the unbeaten Hawks rallied to claim a 70-65 non-conference win, Wednesday night (Nov. 16) in a women's basketball action.

Francis Marion drops to 1-2 on the young season following a match-up of two squads that both advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament last season, while the Hawks move to 3-0.

The Patriots will travel to Spartanburg this weekend to participate in the Courtyard Classic hosted by Converse College.  FMU will face Johnson C. Smith University on Friday at 4 p.m. and the host school on Saturday at 4 p.m.  The next home contest for Francis Marion will be a Nov. 22 tilt with Elizabeth City State University at 6 p.m.

Junior Khai Chandler led FMU with 16 points 13 of which came after halftime.  Junior forward Briana Burgins tallied 15 points and six rebounds before fouling out, while senior point guard TeTe Flowers added 12 points and four assists (before also fouling out) and sophomore Shaunice Fulmore 11 points and six rebounds.

Jordan Payne led the Hawks with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists, while Dhyamond Crenshaw chipped in 11 points off the bench.

Francis Marion scored the game's opening eight points and held a 14-4 advantage with 3:30 left in the first period.  The Hawks trimmed the margin to 17-14 by the end of the quarter.

The Patriots expanded their advantage to 26-17 at the 4:40 mark of the second quarter following a pair of free throws by junior guard Keanua Williams.  Seven straight points by Chowan narrowed the gap to 26-24.  FMU held a 31-27 lead at halftime.

FMU quickly pushed the margin back to seven, at 36-29 early in the third period.  However, an 11-3 run by Chowan gave the Hawks their first lead at 40-39 after a fast-break lay-in by Chantel Roberts.  A jump shot by Fulmore regained the lead for FMU at 41-40, but the Patriots would not score for the next 5:15 and the Hawks took a 47-41 advantage.  A fast-break bucket by Burgins with seven ticks left ended the drought and trimmed the margin to 47-43.

An inside hoop by Flowers to open the final period brought FMU to within 47-45, but that would be the final time the Patriots would be within one possession.  Chowan pushed the lead to 61-52 with 2:35 remaining, but FMU rallied to within 62-58 following two Williams' free throws at the 1:23 mark.  Moments later, the deficit was still four (64-60), but a fast-break basket by Shaikeyla Jordan provided a cushion the Hawks would not relinquish.

After shooting 58.3 percent from the floor in the opening period, the Patriots cooled off to 41.4 percent for the game, including 1-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc.  FMU hit 16-of-25 free throws.  Chowan shot 43.1 percent from the field, including 3-of-10 from long distance, and the Hawks connected on 17-of-28 charity tosses.

Francis Marion converted 28 Chowan turnovers into 23 points.
