FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University men's and women's tennis teams dropped Peach Belt Conference matches to nationally ranked Armstrong State University, Friday afternoon (April 3) on the Kassab Courts. The 30th-ranked Patriot women lost an 8-1 decision to the top-ranked Pirate women, while the FMU men fell 8-1 to the fourth-ranked Armstrong State men.
The Francis Marion women drop to 8-6 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the men fall to 7-7 and 2-5. The Armstrong women (22-0, 11-0) extended their streak of 134 consecutive regular-season conference wins that dates back to the 2003 campaign. The Pirate men (15-4, 8-0) remain unbeaten in conference play this year.
Francis Marion's lone point in the women's match came when Armstrong State defaulted at No.6 singles. It marks the first time this season in PBC play, the Pirates have not won by shutout (9-0).
FMU sophomore Richard Ashforth, ranked 13th nationally in singles, upset fifth-ranked Fernando Bagajo 6-4, 6-4 at No.1 singles to account for the one Patriot victory. Ashforth improves to 12-2 in singles action during the 2015 season.
The Patriot women will play host to the University of Montevallo on Monday at 10 a.m. in PBC action, and both Francis Marion squads will entertain the University of Mount Olive on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
