FLORENCE, SC – Freshman left-hander Kaitlin Munda and senior right-hander Katie Carnes each tossed complete-game three-hitters as Francis Marion University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from St. Andrews University, winning 13-0 in five innings and 3-1 on a blustery Thursday afternoon (Feb. 12).

Francis Marion improves to 7-3 and will host Saint Augustine's University for a twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the opener, FMU rapped out eight hits and took advantage of 11 bases on balls.  After a scoreless first inning, back-to-back triples by Patriot outfielders Tori Gaskins and Mikala Barnhart highlighted a four-run second inning. 

The Patriots scratched two runs in the third and then scored seven times in the fourth frame.

Munda (2-2) allowed only the three hits en route to her first career shutout.  She fanned five and did not issue a walk.  At the plate, she went 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs.

Barnhart and junior third baseman Shannan Lopez both picked up two hits and drove in two runs apiece.  Gaskins drove in three runs and scored twice.

St. Andrews starter Kimberly Cook (1-4) was charged with the loss.

The two teams matched scoreless innings over the first three frames of the second contest.  The Lady Knights (1-7) dented the scoreboard first on a solo homer to center by third baseman Kori Ballard.

Francis Marion responded with a trio of runs in its half of the fourth frame, two of which were unearned.  Freshman first baseman Madison Lowe-Gardner, making her first career start, drilled a 2-run double just inside the third base bag for her first collegiate hit.  Two batters later, junior shortstop Chessie Miller stroked a two-out run-scoring single up the middle.

Miller finished the second game 2-for-3 as did Carnes.  On the mound, Carnes (2-0) struck out six and walked only two.

Freshman righty Summer Jacobs (0-2) worked into the sixth inning for St. Andrews and was the losing pitcher.
