FLORENCE, SC – The 41st-ranked Francis Marion University women's tennis team edged 43rd-ranked GRU Augusta 5-3, while the 29th-ranked FMU men fell to 23rd-ranked GRU Augusta 5-3, Saturday afternoon (April 5) in Peach Belt Conference action.
Both FMU squads will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday when they entertain Georgia College at 10 a.m. on the Kassab Courts. (PLEASE NOTE THE STARTING TIME HAS BEEN MOVED UP ONE HOUR).
The FMU women improve to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the PBC, while the Patriot men drop to 7-4 and 4-3.
Francis Marion's women earned doubles points at No.1 and No.2 and then received singles victories from freshman Samantha Koelliker at the No.1 spot, junior Julia Graf at No.2, and senior Kimberley Hurter at No.5. Hurter's win came in three sets and included a tiebreaker in set two.
The Patriot men trailed 2-1 after doubles play. FMU got singles wins from freshman
Richard Ashforth at the No.2 position and junior
Marius Wahlier at No.3. Ashford remains unbeaten in his young collegiate singles career.
