Jackson's three-pointer gives FMU overtime win

Box Score

BLUEFIELD, WV – Freshman guard A.J. Jackson hit a three-pointer with four seconds left in overtime to lift Francis Marion University to an 82-79 win over previously undefeated Concord University, Saturday evening (Nov. 29) on the second day of the Bluefield State College Currence Men's Basketball Classic.

FMU captures its fifth straight win, the longest such streak since the beginning of the 2010-11 campaign, to improve to 5-1. The Patriots will play host to Piedmont International University on Monday at 7:30 p.m. on Elementary School Honors Night.

Junior forward Dii'Jon Allen-Jordan led Francis Marion with 26 points and eight rebounds.  The 6-6 Plainfield, N.J., native connected on 7-of-10 field goal attempts and a near-perfect 12-of-13 from the foul line.

Freshman swingman Mike Davis Jr. tallied 17 points and seven rebounds for the Patriots, while freshman guard Detrek Browning added 14 points.

"We didn't play our best, but the guys showed a lot of heart down the stretch," said FMU head coach Gary Edwards.  "Dii'Jon played through a foul to power home a shot to get us to overtime, and then one of our outstanding freshman (A.J.) hit a shot to win it."

Aaron Miller scored 21 points to pace Concord (4-1).

After trailing 41-31 at halftime, Francis Marion still trailed by six with 1:42 remaining in regulation. Junior David Jerome and Allen-Jordan hit two free throws apiece to bring FMU to within 69-67 with 50 ticks left.  Allen-Jordan then knotted the score on a bucket with four seconds remaining off an assist from Davis Jr.

FMU took a 74-73 lead in the extra session following a layup by Browning with 3:15 on the clock. A three-point play by Allen-Jordan upped the FMU advantage to 79-75 with 1:11 remaining, but the Mountain Lions rallied to tie the score on a layup by Terry Hopewell with 23 seconds left setting the stage for Jackson's winning shot – that was assisted on by Browning.  A last-second three-point attempt by Concord was no good.

Concord led by as many as 13 in the first half before settling for the 10-point margin at intermission.

The Mountain Lions again led by 13 points, early in the second half at 48-35.  FMU gradually rallied to within two points on several occasions, but could not tie the score until Allen-Jordan's basket in the final seconds of regulation.

FMU shot 41.5 from the field, but was 5-of-9 in the overtime period. During the game, the Patriots were 7-of-24 from three-point range and 21-of-28 at the foul stripe.  A night after only committing five turnovers, Francis Marion made only nine miscues on Saturday.

Concord shot 46 percent from the floor, including 9-of-25 from beyond the arc, and was 12-of-21 at the foul line.
