Box Score GREENWOOD, SC - Playing in her final collegiate game, senior forward Hattie Harris registered career highs for points (13) and rebounds (7) and hit the game-winning free throws with 15.2 seconds left to lift Francis Marion University to a season-ending road victory over Lander University 67-66, Saturday afternoon (March 2) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.
Francis Marion ends its season with two straight wins to even its overall record at 13-13. FMU places fifth place in the PBC's East Division standings with a 7-12 mark. The Patriots also sweep the season series from Lander for the first time in four seasons.
Following Harris for the Patriots was junior forward Kim Roach with 16 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, and seven rebounds, while senior guard Kristen Dickerson scored a season-high equaling 15 points. Dickerson connected on 7-of-11 field goal attempts.
Precious Elkins led Lander (9-17, 6-13) with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
Harris drained both ends of a 1-and-1 free throw situation to put FMU up 67-66 with 15.2 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Lander turned the ball over and despite FMU missing three free throws in the final five seconds, the Patriots were able to hold off the Bearcats.
The outcome of the game hinged on two big runs in the second half.
Lander led for the majority of the first stanza, including a pair of seven-point leads, but the Patriots pulled to within 36-32 at intermission.
A three-pointer by junior guard Erin Pinkett gave FMU its first lead of the second half at 45-42 with 14:11 remaining in the game. Lander responded by scoring 15 consecutive points to go ahead 57-45 with 9:25 left as the Patriots were held scoreless for more than five minutes.
Not wanting to see its season conclude with a defeat, Francis Marion answered with its own 16-0 run take a 61-57 advantage with 5:46 on the clock as Lander went scoreless for more than four minutes. Harris and Roach combined for 11 of the 16 points.
Lander tied the score at both 61-61 and 63-63 before taking a 66-63 advantage on a three-pointer by Briana Wade with 2:11 remaining. It was Wade's only basket of the game. FMU junior Dee Gray trimmed the deficit to one on a jump shot in the lane with 1:07 left. Both teams traded turnovers on the next possessions before Harris rebounded a Lander miss in the final 22 seconds and was fouled, setting the stage for her game-winning free throws.
In addition to Harris and Dickerson, senior forward Jasmine Williams-Hayes also played her final game for the Red, White, and Blue – registering six points and four rebounds. Senior guard Tiara Gause, who has missed the past nine games with an injury, also saw her FMU career come to a close.
