Box Score PEMBROKE, NC - Senior guard Kristen Dickerson and junior guard Dee Gray led four players in double figures with 13 points and Francis Marion University forced 16 UNC Pembroke turnovers as the Patriots held on at the end for a 72-69 win, Thursday night (Feb. 7) in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action.
Francis Marion evens its record at 9-9 and improves to 3-8 in the PBC. FMU will return home to host Lander University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in its annual Play 4 Kay game to raise funds for and awareness of breast cancer.
Dickerson connected on 6-of-9 field goal attempts and recorded six rebounds, along with three of her team's eight steals. Gray was crucial down the stretch, converting all seven of her free throw attempts, including 6-of-6 in the final 1:24. The Patriots entered the game shooting 65.4 percent from the foul line, but went 11-of-12 to capture the road win.
Patriot junior guard Erin Pinkett scored 12 points, while shooting 4-of-7 from behind the three-point line, and junior forward Kim Roach tallied 10 points and eight rebounds. Both Briana Robinson and Camille Dash added 8 points apiece.
Guard Wayne Mack led UNCP (10-11, 4-8) with 15 points, while guard Chandrica Fuller registered 12 points, and forward Kierra Haney pulled down 14 rebounds.
Francis Marion came out firing in the first half, hitting on 6-of-10 from behind the three-point line, including Pinkett's four triples. FMU led by as many as nine points in the opening 20 minutes. Going into halftime, the Patriots held a 41-38 lead after shooting 50 percent overall from the floor.
In the second half, the game was back and forth with multiple lead changes. With the Braves holding a 61-58 lead, baskets by Robinson and Dickerson gave the Patriots a one-point margin and the lead for good and started a 10-0 run.
After a Mack three-pointer with nine seconds left trimmed the lead to one at 70-69, the Braves got the ball with a chance to win. However, UNCP turned the ball over and Gray made two free throws with one second left to seal the victory.
FMU finished the game at 42.9 percent shooting, while the Braves shot 37 percent.
