Gause can't stop bleeding as Patriots fall to Pirates

SAVANNAH, GA—Senior guard Tiara Gause scored a game and season-high 20 points, but Francis Marion University was defeated in Peach Belt Conference action 94-72 by Armstrong Atlantic State University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 5) in women's basketball action.

FMU (6-4, 1-3) will return home to host three straight PBC opponents beginning with Columbus State on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m.

Gause was 10-of-15 from the floor, while also grabbing five rebounds. Senior forward Jasmine Williams-Hayes tallied a career-high 15 points on near-perfect 7-of-8 shooting

Karolina Rykowska led Armstrong Atlantic (6-5, 1-3) with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and nine rebounds.

Francis Marion committed 11 turnovers in the game while also forcing 14 turnovers, but the Patriots shot just 29 percent in the first half that saw the Pirates go into halftime leading by 21.

The Patriots held the lead for a short period of time after Gause made a layup to put FMU up 7-6 three minutes into the game. After Rykowska hit a layup just 30 seconds later, the Pirates never relinquished the lead. Winding down in the half, the Pirates scored the final six points to increase the lead to 43-22.

The second half saw the Pirates lead never drop below 18 points, even though the Patriots shot better than 57 percent from the floor in the second half, along with 3-6 from behind the three-point line.
