FLORENCE, SC – The 10th-ranked Francis Marion University men's and women's tennis teams both earned Peach Belt Conference victories over North Georgia College and State University, Sunday afternoon (April 15) with the men rallying for a 6-3 win over the 25th-ranked Saints and the women claiming a 8-1 win.
The Patriot women end their regular season with a 16-2 overall record and place third in the PBC with a 10-2 mark. The FMU men finish up 10-5 and 6-3 and place fourth in the conference standings.
Both squads will play in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament beginning on Friday (April 20) at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.
On Sunday, the men fell behind 2-1 after doubles play, but rallied to win five of the six singles matches. Among the singles victories was a straight-set decision by Dirk Bair at the No.6 position, one of two seniors honored prior to the match (Jack Bishop was the other).
On the women's side, Francis Marion's only loss came at No.6 singles. The women's lone senior Jitka Gavdunova continued to extend her impressive career marks with a pair of wins. She upped her all-time singles mark to 69-8 with a straight-sets win at No.1, and improved her career doubles record to 72-11 with an easy 8-2 victory at the top spot.
