LAURINBURG, NC - Five Francis Marion University pitchers combined on a three-hitter while striking out 15 St. Andrews University batters and senior second baseman Brock McCallister rapped out three hits as the 23rd-ranked Patriots cruised to a 14-1 non-conference baseball win, Wednesday afternoon (March 21).
FMU improves to 19-10 and readies for a key Peach Belt Conference series at Armstrong Atlantic State University this weekend. The series will begin with a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
FMU junior right-hander Gary Ashcraft pitched the first four innings and allowed one hit and one run while fanning six. Senior righty Jarrott Hooks (4-0) pitched the next two frames and was credited with the win. Don Sandifer, Jeremy Knab, and Tyler Hibbs each followed with one scoreless frame.
The Patriots broke up a scoreless tie with five runs in the top of the fourth. The frame featured two-run singles by both Jacob Golliday and Hibbs. FMU added two runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-0, while St. Andrews (8-20) scored its lone run in the last of the fifth.
Francis Marion responded with five tallies in the top of sixth as the Knights committed three errors and Will Chandler and Buddy Sosnoskie each registered RBI doubles.
McCallister finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored, while Chandler, Sosnoskie, Hibbs, and Jarrod Reed each had two hits.
