Kibler and Blandin tally second-half scores in 2-0 FMU win

FLORENCE, SC – Senior defender Justin Kibler and freshman forward Alex Blandin each tallied second-half goals to power Francis Marion University to a 2-0 victory over UNC Pembroke, Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 13) in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action.

Francis Marion has won five of its last six matches, stands 5-6-1 overall, and evens its PBC mark at 2-2-0.  The victory is also the third consecutive 2-0 win by the Patriots over UNCP, stretching back to 2008.  The Braves fall to 3-7-2 and 1-4-1.

A scoreless first half featured only a combined nine shots and only two serious scoring opportunities.  Blandin's 10-yard attempt in the fifth minute bounced off the left post.  UNCP's Brett Luccia was the beneficiary of two quick one-touch passes by teammates in the 32nd minute, but his 10-yard shot from the middle of the penalty box went directly to FMU goalkeeper Clark Richeson.

Kibler scored his second career goal, and the first since his freshman season, at the 55:18 mark.  A line-drive corner kick by Chris Foltanski went through the goal area to Kibler several yards beyond the right post.  Kibler's quick shot deflected off a UNCP player and into the goal.

Six minutes earlier, Foltanski had an opportunity to dent the scoreboard, but his header from 12-yards out also found the left post. First-year Patriot Justin Walton also made friends with the left post on a 15-yard blast in the 79th minute.

Foltanski also assisted on the Patriots' final score.  After a 30-yard run and dribble, he laid the ball to his right where Blandin converted a 15-yard shot at the 82:55 mark.

Francis Marion outshot the Braves 15-7 and led 8-6 in corner kicks.  Richeson registered four saves en route to his third shutout of the year and 15th of his career – one shy of the Patriot record (16) set by Mike Frazee between 1998 and 2001.

UNCP freshman goalkeeper Ryan Hanson also made four saves.

FMU will play at North Georgia College and State University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., before returning home to entertain Lander University on Monday at 4 p.m. in the program's annual Passionately Pink for the Cure match.  UNCP plays at Lander on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Francis Marion leads the all-time series with the Braves 24-16-4, the most wins for the Patriots over one opponent in the program's 36-year history.
