Francis Marion University Athletics

Freshman Valery Gomez of the Francis Marion University women's tennis team has been named the McDonald's Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Feb. 10-16, 2025.

A native of Floridablanca, Colombia, Gomez went 2-0 in both singles and doubles last week. 

In a 4-3 road loss at Augusta University, she won at No.4 singles over Priscilla Landi by a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) score and teamed with freshman Lara Lanno to win at No.1 doubles 6-2 over Andrea Gonzalez and Juliana Martinez.  In a 4-3 victory over local-rival Coker, she provided the match-clinching point with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Salome' Sierra at No.4 singles, while teaming with Lanno to win at No.1 doubles 6-4 over Jade Bellegy and Emerson Banning.

Francis Marion's next match will be at Limestone University on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m.
