Senior shortstop and right-handed pitcher Rayth Petersen of the Francis Marion University baseball team has been named the McDonald's Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Feb. 3-9, 2025.
A native of Cary. Ill., Petersen .438 (7-for-16) with five runs scored, a homer, and eight runs batted in during four contests last week (all wins). He slugged .625 with a .526 on-base percentage and did not commit an error in five fielding chances. He also made one pitching appearance and earned a save with two scoreless innings in relief.
His week included hitting a walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to give FMU a 5-4 win over Emory & Henry Universityon Feb. 8. In the first game that day's twinbill, he was 2-for-3 with a run scored and the save. Earlier, he had three hits, including a homer, and five RBIs versus Emory & Henry on Feb. 7 and registered a hit, an RBI, and three runs scored against Claflin University on Feb. 5.
He has hit safely in all seven games this season with four multi-hit games.
Francis Marion (7-0) will play at Augusta University on Tuesday (Feb. 11) at 2 p.m. before opening Conference Carolinas play with a three-game series at the University of Mount Olive on Feb. 15-16.
