Newsome begins his second season on the Francis Marion staff. His responsibilities include working in the areas of hitting and fielding, as well as recruiting.
A native of Florence, he spent five years as an assistant coach at Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke prior to coming to FMU in 2014. During his time on the Braves' bench, UNCP compiled a 179-79 record and made one appearance in the NCAA Tournament (2011). Newsome also served as a lecturer in UNCP’s Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department.
Newsome is a 2009 graduate of Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. An infielder, he played two seasons for the Monarchs and earned the Andrew T. Bell Teammate of the Year award as a senior. Newsome helped lead Methodist to a 58-30-1 mark in those two years, including a conference championship and NCAA Division III Tournament berth in 2007. He later returned to his alma mater and served as an assistant coach for one season.
He graduated with a bachelor of science in physical education and went on to earn a master’s degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 2010.
Newsome also served a stint with the Florence RedWolves of the Coastal Plains League - a wood-bat collegiate summer league that features some of the best collegiate players from around the nation. He was the head coach during the 2011 campaign and an assistant coach under Wes Davis in 2009. As the assistant, he was in charge of team defense and coached first base. That 2009 squad had four players selected in the MLB Draft.
In the summer of 2010, Newsome managed the Tradewater Pirates in the KIT League and earned Coach of the Year honors. Under Newsome’s tutelage, the Pirates won the regular season championship as well as the tournament championship and finished with a 34-15 record.
Prior to his NCAA playing career in Fayetteville, Newsome played two seasons for Curtis Hudson and Sean Heffernan at Florence-Darlington Technical College, where he was a member of the 2006 Region X regular-season championship team.
Newsome is a product of East Clarendon High School.
