MURFREESBORO, NC – A doubles-point victory inspired four straight singles-play wins as Francis Marion University soared past Chowan University with a 5-2 victory in league play on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 18) at the Rose Family Tennis Complex.
 
FMU improves its overall record to 10-9, 8-4 in conference play, while Chowan falls to 7-8 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The Patriots finished second in the East Division with a 6-2 mark. The Conference Carolinas Tournament is Wednesday through Saturday (Apr. 22-25) at Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.  FMU is seeded sixth and will face with seventh-seeded North Greenville University in a first-round match on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
 
After dropping the opening doubles match 6-3 at the No.3 slot, the Patriots swooped in to take the final two. Patriot freshman Viktor Virághalmi and sophomore Miguel Maia earned a 6-3 win at No.2, followed by freshman Boris van Ruiten and junior Alexandre Frigout, who secured another 6-3 victory, this one at the No.1 position.
 
Frigout set the tone early in singles play with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win at No.2, followed by Virághalmi with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No.4. Francis Marion freshman Koldo Zuniga was next to impress in a decisive 6-3, 6-1 win at the No.6 position to clinch the match.
 
Maia, at the No. 1 spot, was next to finish with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory before the final two positions belonged to Chowan.
 
Both Maia and Virághalmi finished the regular season 8-3 in conference singles play.
