FLORENCE, SC – Sophomores
Miguel Maia and
Diego Vega Espinosa both captured two victories as Francis Marion University downed Ferrum College 6-1, Friday afternoon (Apr. 10) in Conference Carolinas men's tennis play.
Francis Marion is now 7-9 overall and 5-4 in conference action. The Patriots will close out their 2026 home schedule at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Lees-McRae College. Admission to the Kassab Courts is free.
Vega Espinosa and sophomore
Adrian Calvo Guerrero were victorious 6-0 at No.3 doubles and Maia and freshman Viktor Viraghalmi followed with a 6-0 win at the top spot to earn the doubles point for FMU and a 1-0 advantage.
Senior
Niklas Plath, who was recognized as the team's lone senior before the match, upped the lead to 2-0 with a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory at No.6 singles. It was his fourth straight-sets win in five matches this season.
The Panthers won at the No.2 slot to trim the margin to 2-1.
However, FMU freshman
Koldo Zuniga claimed a 6-2, 6-2 decision at the fourth rung and Maia won at the No.1 position 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the match for Francis Marion.
The other Francis Marion points came from Vega Espinosa (6-1, 6-2) at No.5 singles and junior
Alexander Mirkov (6-3, 7-6 (7-5)) at No.3 singles.
