FLORENCE, SC – Monday's (March 2) non-conference men's tennis match came down to the third set of the final singles match where West Virginia Wesleyan College claimed the victory to take a narrow 4-3 decision over Francis Marion University.
Francis Marion (2-3) will play at local-rival Coker University on Thursday at 1 p.m.
In doubles play, FMU sophomores
Diego Vega Espinosa and
Adrian Calvo Guerrero captured a quick 6-1 decision at the No.3 position. However, the Bobcats (6-3) responded with a 6-4 win at the top spot and a 7-5 victory at the No.2 slot to claim the doubles point and a 1-0 advantage.
The margin grew to 2-0 when West Virginia Wesleyan won at No.2 singles in straight sets.
Singles victories by FMU junior
Alexandre Frigout (7-6 [7-2], 7-6 [7-2]) at the No.3 slot and freshman
Boris van Ruiten (0-6, 6-3, 6-3) at the No.4 position evened the match at 2-2.
The Bobcats regained the lead with a three-set win at the top spot, but Vega Espinosa won the No.5 match by a 6-3, 6-4 score to again deadlock the match at 3-3.
The No.6 singles match was won by the visitors 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 to conclude the match.
