#15 Patriots complete 8-7 comeback win in extras over #9 Young Harris

FLORENCE, SC – Redshirt senior catcher Dariel Villaran Goundis delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning, as No. 15-ranked Francis Marion University scored five unanswered runs to complete an 8-7 comeback win over No. 9 Young Harris College in Conference Carolinas baseball action at Sparrow Stadium on Friday night (Mar. 13).

Francis Marion (20-4, 11-2) continues its three-game series with the Mountain Lions on Saturday, March 14, with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Six Patriots recorded multi-hit performances, led by senior second baseman Will Dorrell, who went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and one run scored. Senior left fielder Riley Orr finished 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Redshirt junior right fielder Charlie Bussey III and junior third baseman Brandon Vargas both tallied two hits, one run batted in, and one run scored.

Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Robbie Jordan (7-0), a product of Florence Christian School, earned the win after recording the final out in the top of the 10th out of the bullpen and escaping a bases-loaded jam. He ties Dylan Owen (2005-07) for second place on the career wins list with 28 (in only 35 decisions). Jordan is one shy of the FMU record of 29, held by Hall of Famer Erin Jones (2002-04).

Junior righty Eze Rojas took a no-decision after yielding four earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and seven walks in 4.2 innings pitched (118 pitches). Redshirt freshman Owen Powell tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

The opening three innings of the contest were a pitching duel with only two combined hits recorded between the sides.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Patriots grabbed a 3-0 advantage over Young Harris after recording five hits in the frame. Junior first baseman Ethan McAnally led off with a single to left field before Orr chopped a double down the left-field line, which McAnally scored on due to a fielding error in the outfield, 1-0. Dorrell followed up with an RBI single down the right-field line before Vargas delivered a one-out RBI single up the middle on a perfectly executed hit-and-run, 3-0.

Young Harris countered in the top of the fifth with four runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-run single to left field, 4-3. The Mountain Lions continued to add to their lead in the sixth inning with an RBI double and single to climb the advantage to 6-3. Young Harris tallied another run to head into the seventh-inning stretch with a 7-3 edge after scoring on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the seventh, FMU rallied to tie the contest at 7-7 following four runs on four hits. Redshirt junior Zander Buchan drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to left field before Bussey III hit an RBI double down the left-field line. With two outs, Orr and Dorrell produced back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game heading into the final two frames.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Young Harris loaded the bases in the top of the 10th with two outs before FMU turned to Jordan, who closed the door out of the bullpen with a fly out to left field.

In the bottom of the 10th, Dorrell hit a leadoff single to center field before sophomore Adrian Nina entered the game as a pinch runner and moved to second on a wild pitch. Villaran Goundis stepped to the plate and laced an RBI single through the left side to score the game-winning run, 8-7.

Ryan Heishman (1-1) was saddled with the loss after surrendering one run on two hits while failing to record an out.
