MURFREESBORO, NC – Francis Marion University clouted 15 home runs and set several scoring records en route to sweeping Saturday's (Feb. 14) Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader from Chowan University, winning 33-2 and 18-7.
Francis Marion, winners of seven straight, improve to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The 73 runs scored in the three-game series is a program record. FMU beat the Hawks 22-7 on Friday in the opening game.
FMU will return to Florence to begin a four-game home stand. The Patriots will host Lander University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The 33 runs scored in the opening game of Saturday's twinbill was a program record, besting a 30-run output against Allen University in 1985. The team's nine home runs in game one is the second-highest mark in team history, trailing only a national-record 11-homer contest at Newberry College in 1993. The 27 hits in game one was two shy of the program mark set in 2008 against Augusta State University.
Junior first baseman
Charlie Bussey III tied the program's single-game record with his six-hit performance that included two doubles, a homer, and six runs batted in. Junior designated hitter
Ethan McAnally hit a pair of three-run homers, while his replacement junior
Zach Doorlag went 3-for-4 with his own three-run home run.
Senior second baseman
Jimmy Koza went 5-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs.
FMU senior right-handed pitcher
Robbie Jordan (3-0) was the beneficiary of the record-setting effort. He pitched five innings and allowed only four hits and no earned runs, while striking out eight. It was the Florence native's 24th career win in 31 decisions and puts him fifth on the Patriot career victories list.
The Patriots scored five times in the first inning as senior third baseman
Will Dorrell and Bussey III led off with back-to-back doubles. McAnally followed with his first three-run shot, and later in the frame, junior catcher
Zander Buchan blasted a solo shot to right field. Buchan finished 4-for-5 with six RBIs and a school-record tying five runs scored.
FMU would add five runs in the second, 11 runs in the third, two runs each in the fourth and fifth frames, and eight in the seventh and final inning.
In the second game – that was shortened to six innings due to darkness – Francis Marion hit six more home runs, including two more by McAnally and two by redshirt freshman infielder
Myles Proffitt. McAnally finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while senior center fielder
Daniel Hussey finished a single shy of the cycle while scoring twice and driving in three runs.
Bussey III, Proffitt, and junior shortstop
Brandon Vargas all had two hits. Proffitt also drove in four runs.
A third-inning walk extended Dorrell's streak of safely reaching base to 53 games.
Junior southpaw
Aydin Palmer (2-0), a native of Effingham, S.C., picked up the win, while fanning six Hawks batters.
FMU scored once in the first inning, five in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth.
