NEWBERRY, SC – Francis Marion University got two wins each from junior Alexandre Frigout, sophomore Diego Vega Espinosa, and freshman Boris van Ruiten to capture a 6-1 season-opening win over Newberry College, Thursday afternoon (Feb. 12) in non-conference men's tennis play.
 
Francis Marion (1-0) will play at Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hickory, N.C.
 
In doubles play, the Wolves (0-5) earned a 6-4 win at the top spot, but Francis Marion claimed 7-5 decisions at both the No.2 and 3 positions to gain the doubles point.  Frigout and van Ruiten won at the No.2 position and Vega Espinosa and Adrian Calvo Guerrero were victorious at the No.3 spot.
 
FMU freshman Viktor Virághalmi won 6-4, 6-3 at the No.2 position as singles play began to up the advantage to 2-0.  Frigout took a 6-0, 6-4 decision at No.3 singles and  van Ruiten won 6-2, 6-1 at No.4 to clinch the match for the Patriots. 
 
FMU freshman Koldo Zuniga was victorious 7-5, 6-4 at the No.5 spot and Vega Espinosa won 7-6 (10-8), 6-0 at No.6 to account for the other FMU points.
 
Newberry's lone point was a three-set win at the top position.
