BANNER ELK, NC – A penalty kick scored by the Bobcats in the 50th minute ultimately decided a tightly contested match, as #7 Francis Marion University suffered a 1-0 loss at Lees-McRae College on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 3) in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action.
The Patriots saw their eight-match winning streak end and fall to 9-2-1 overall with a 6-1 mark in league competition. Both programs entered today's contest being recognized in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II poll, as FMU ranked seventh and Lees-McRae was receiving votes. Meanwhile, the Bobcats remain unbeaten with a 9-0-2 record (5-0-2 in conference) and have yet to allow a goal on Tate Field in 2026.
FMU will return to Hartzler Field on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to face the University of Mount Olive in a divisional matchup slated for 7 p.m.
Francis Marion controlled possession in the opening minutes and found early passing lanes, but a Lees-McRae defense that has surrendered just four goals all season prevented a majority of the FMU attack. The Bobcats appeared to find their breakthrough in the 22nd minute with a goal off a corner kick, but the offside flag was raised to keep the contest scoreless. The Patriots registered their first shot at the 39:43 mark as junior forward
Jose Coutinho gathered a loose ball following a slip by Lees-McRae but was unable to put the attempt on goal. FMU pressured the LMC defense in the final minutes, but the contest went into the break tied at 0-0.
Coutinho registered the opening shot of the second half with a header that was saved by the Bobcat goalkeeper at the 48:39 mark. Just moments later, Lees-McRae was awarded a penalty kick following a foul on the top-left side of the 18-yard box. Jonas Barelt of the Bobcats buried the penalty kick in the top-right corner off the crossbar to take the 1-0 lead.
Despite outshooting Lees-McRae by an 8-6 margin in the second half, the Patriots only managed two shots on goal. Both teams finished the contest tied at 3-3 on corner kicks.
Graduate student goalkeeper
Vicent Sanchis finished with one save on seven shots faced in 90 minutes of action.
