Gartner nets conference Player of the Week award

Francis Marion University junior outside hitter Madilyn Gartner has been named the Conference Carolinas Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 22-28.

A native of Albertville, Minn., Gartner averaged 4.40 kills and 2.80 digs per set in three matches last week.  She also registered two service aces, three blocks, and a .215 hitting percentage, while totaling 47.5 points for a 4.75 points per set average.

Her week began with eight kills and seven digs in a 3-0 road win at Chowan University and then included 13 kills and 12 digs in a 3-0 win over Erskine College and 23 kills and nine digs in a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Flagler College.

She has helped lead FMU to a 5-0 start in conference play, while individually ranking second in Conference Carolinas in total kills (175) and kills per set (3.65) and fourth in points per set (3.93).

She is three shy of 500 kills for her career.

Francs Marion hosts USC Aiken for a non-conference match on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before taking to the road for conference contests at Lees-McRae College on Friday (7 p.m.) and King University (Tenn.) on Saturday (2 p.m).

Gartner is majoring in biology and is a product of St. Michael-Albertville High School.
