FERRUM, VA – Senior
Elian Aguilar Valencia scored a pair of goals to lead Francis Marion University to a 5-0 blanking of Conference Carolinas newcomer Ferrum College, Saturday evening (Sept. 20) in men's soccer play.
Francis Marion improves to 1-1-3 overall and stays unbeaten in conference play at 1-0-2. The Patriots will host Mars Hill University on Wednesday at 5 p.m. That contest will be a rematch of last season's NCAA first-round tournament match which ended 0-0 but saw Mars Hill advance in penalty kicks.
Senior defender
David Guevara gave FMU a 1-0 advantage at the 8:34 mark. His goal followed the second of two corner kicks taken by the Patriots in a 37-second span, and where the ball was eventually pinballed around in the penalty area.
Toufik Najem was credited with an assist on the score.
A giveaway by the Panther backline at the top of the penalty area allowed graduate student midfielder
Antonio Garda to nail an 18-yard shot into the Ferrum goal at 38:33.
Only 28 seconds later, another turnover deep in the Ferrum defensive end led to a successful 18-yard shot from Aguilar Valencia that curled into the goal. Freshman
Byron Mitchell earned an assist on the play.
Junior defender
Daniel Miranda upped the margin to 4-0 on a rebound score at the 64:13 mark. His first shot was blocked by a defender, but the ball caromed right back to him and his second attempt from 15 yards out beat Ferrum goalkeeper Michael Arzillo to the near post.
The final goal, by Aguilar Valencia, came on a counter started by Mitchell. He gained control of the ball, split a pair of defenders, and fed Aguilar Valencia to his left. Aguilar Valencia dribbled in from near midfield and sailed a 16-yard shot from the left side of the box into the upper netting with 5:45 remaining.
Patriot goalkeeper
Juan Antonio Tripero Sanchez posted his second consecutive clean sheet as he snared two saves. Arzillo finished with six stops.
Francis Marion outshot the Panthers 16-10 and held a slight 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Aguilar Valencia and Garda led FMU with four and three shots respectively.
