20th-ranked Patriots pitch past Chowan

FLORENCE, SC – Six Francis Marion University pitchers limited Chowan University to one run on 11 hits as the 20th-ranked Patriots swept a Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader from the Hawks, winning 7-1 and 11-0 on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 19).

Francis Marion ups its overall mark to 36-11 and finishes conference play 22-8.  Under the direction of first-year head coach Jeff Jefferson, the Patriots are guaranteed of finishing no worse than in a tie for second place as other schools still have one conference series left to play.

The Patriots will conclude their regular-season schedule with a three-game non-conference series against Newberry College next weekend.  FMU will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a Senior Day single contest on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Junior center fielder Will Dorrell paced FMU with two hits at the plate in the opener.

Senior southpaw Rijnaldo Euson (10-2) notched his 10th win with his sixth complete game of the season.  He scattered seven hits, allowed just one run in the final inning, and struck out a season-high 12 batters – one shy of his career high.  He also pushed his season strikeout total to a conference-leading 100.

Chowan sophomore right-hander Josh Wise (2-5) faced only one batter over the minimum through the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth.

FMU senior catcher Caleb Oakley led-off with a walk and moved to third when sophomore first baseman Charlie Bussey III hit a double that one-hopped the left-center field wall – the Patriots' first hit.  Dorrell then plated Oakley with a ringing single down the right field line. Bussey III came home with the second run when senior second baseman Owen Taylor singled through the left side, the Darlington native's 50th RBI of the season.

The Patriots blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth with five runs to forge a 7-0 advantage. Senior right fielder Austin Bunn was hit by a pitch for the school-record tying 25th time this season to force in the first run. Former FMU catcher J. Taylor set the mark at 25 in 1999.

Owen Taylor scored on a wild pitch, and with bases again loaded, junior third baseman Jimmy Koza was hit by a pitch to make it 5-0.  Senior shortstop Rayth Petersen drove home the sixth run with a sacrifice fly as FMU extended its nation-leading total in that category to 36.  Freshman outfielder Adrian Nina scored the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.

Francis Marion started game two off with a bang, batting through the line-up in the bottom of the first and scoring four times.  Dorrell and Taylor both added to the team's sacrifice fly total with fly balls to right center as FMU took a 2-0 lead.  Senior designated hitter Noah Stout and junior catcher Dariel Villaran Goundis later added run-scoring singles to right as the advantage swelled to 4-0.

The Patriots manufactured a run in the second as Petersen was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored on an RBI-single to right by Bussey III.  Bussey III stole second and then came home on a double to left-center by Taylor.

FMU senior right-hander Robbie Jordan made the game-two start for the Patriots.  He tossed three scoreless innings and allowed just two hits with three strikeouts.

Upon Jordan's departure, the Hawks loaded the bases on three consecutive walks in the fourth.  However, senior right-hander Josh Adams (5-1) entered the contest and retired the next three batters – all by strikeouts – to end the threat.  His mastery continued into the next inning with three more strikeouts.

Villaran Goundis blooped a two-out, run-scoring single into shallow right center to score Stout in the fifth for a 7-0 margin.

Dorrell drew a seventh-inning walk to extend his streak of safely reaching base to 37 games.  He later added a two-run single as part of a four-run eighth inning.

Taylor lined an RBI-double down the left field line in the eighth and junior pinch hitter Tyler Reynolds lifted yet another sac fly to account for the 11th and final run.

After Adams, junior right-hander Sam Duvall (1 inning) and senior righty Danny Leo (3 innings) combined to secure the shutout.  Leo picked up his second save of 2025.

Petersen, Bussey III, Taylor, and Villaran Goundis all registered two hits in the second contest.  Taylor drove in three runs and Villaran Goundis two.

Right-hander Angel Diaz (1-6) was tagged with the game-two loss.

Francis Marion hurlers struck out 38 Chowan batters in the three-game series.
