FLORENCE, SC – Led by freshmen Miguel Maia and Diego Vega Espinosa, Francis Marion University defeated the University of Mount Olive 4-3, Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 16) in Conference Carolinas men's tennis action.
 
Francis Marion (11-6, 7-2) clinches at least a share of second place in the conference standings under first-year head coach Laszlo Leiter.  FMU will now await the seedings for the conference tournament which will be held April 24-27 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
 
Francis Marion took a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point.  Vega Espinosa and senior Luis Lopez Sarasa were victorious at the No.3 position by a 6-0 score, while senior Martin Barbera and Maia won at the top spot 7-5.
 
Mount Olive quickly erased that deficit and took a 2-1 lead with three-set singles wins at the No.1 and No.5 spots.
 
Maia evened the match at 2-2 with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory at No.2 singles and senior Harri Lloyd-Evans followed with a come-from-behind 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win at the No.3 position.
 
Vega Espinosa accounted for the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No.6 singles, before the Trojans captured the No.4 match.
 
Vega Espinosa and Maia lead FMU with 12 singles wins this season, and Vega Espinosa finishes the regular-season unbeaten (8-0) against conference opponents.
