FLORENCE, SC – Senior Martin Barbera reached a career milestone on Senior Day, while freshman Diego Vega Espinosa provided the match-clinching point in the final singles match to finish as Francis Marion University edged Young Harris College 4-3, Saturday afternoon (Apr. 12) in Conference Carolinas men's tennis play.
 
Francis Marion, now 10-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play, will conclude its regular season by hosting the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with second-place on the line.
 
Young Harris claimed the No.3 and No.2 doubles matches in that order to earn the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.  Barbera and freshman Miguel Maia won the No.1 doubles match in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3).
 
Barbera dispatched Mason Harmon 6-0, 6-4 at No.1 singles to even the match at 1-1.  It was his 50th career singles win in 75 decisions, and he becomes only the 13th player in program history to reach that plateau.  Barbera also owns 46 career doubles victories.
 
Freshman Adrian Calvo Guerrero put FMU ahead with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the No.6 position and freshman Miguel Maia upped the advantage to 3-1 with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 win at the No.2 spot.
 
The Mountain Lions then captured three-set wins at positions No.4 and No.3 to deadlock the match at 3-3.
 
Vega Espinosa supplied the winning point with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) decision at No.5 singles.
