#18 Patriots fall in twinbill to Braves

FLORENCE, SC – Eighteenth-ranked Francis Marion University saw its 13-game winning streak snapped by I-95 rival UNC Pembroke as the Patriots dropped a pair of one-run games, 4-3 and 6-5, on Saturday (Apr. 12) afternoon in Conference Carolinas league action.  The series was held at CarolinaBank Field in the Florence Sports Complex with UNCP as the home team.

Francis Marion (32-11, 19-8) will play a non-conference road game at Erskine College on Tuesday (Apr. 13) at 3 p.m.

FMU senior designated hitter Noah Stout supplied all the Patriot offense in game one with a three-run homer, while senior catcher Caleb Oakley had the only other Francis Marion hit.

Blake Hinson was one of two Braves (23-18, 11-13) to record a multi-hit game off of Patriot senior southpaw Rijnaldo Euson (9-2).  Hinson also drove in three runs.

Euson also threw yet another complete game with five strikeouts and eight hits allowed.

Rhett James improved to a record of 3-2 after claiming the win in game one with two innings of work and two strikeouts. Seth Willis fanned seven batters across three hitless innings to earn his seventh save of the season.

Stout lifted Francis Marion to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the second with his three-run shot over the left field wall, scoring junior centerfielder Will Dorrell and Oakley, who reached earlier on a hit by pitch and a walk.

UNCP responded in the next half inning with two runs trail 3-2.  A two-run single by Hinson allowed the Braves to assume a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth that they held on to for the remainder of the game.

Dorrell paced the Patriots in game two with a run scored, two hits, and two RBIs, while junior third baseman Jimmy Koza drove in an additional two runs. Besides Dorrell, Stout was the only Patriot to record multiple hits in game two, while four other Patriots tallied one hit apiece.

Once again, the Patriots jumped ahead to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the fourth. The frame began with a lead-off single hit by Stout. Senior right-fielder Austin Bunn doubled to right field and both were driven in by Koza's single down the right-field line.  Koza later scored on a fielding error by UNCP.

The Braves were able to overtake the Patriots in the lower half of the frame, scoring four times.

Dorrell deadlocked the score at 4-4 in the top of the sixth as he notched a two-out single to center field that scored senior shortstop Rayth Petersen. UNCP broke the stalemate with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Braves back in front 6-4.

Dorrell cut the lead to 6-5 with a solo homer leading off the ninth, but the next three Patriots were retired.

FMU senior right-hander Daniel Barcena falls to 3-2 after allowing six hits and three runs, while striking out five.

Landon Lucas (3-2) picked up the win after 2.1 innings, one hit allowed, and fanning four. For the second time in the doubleheader, Willis claimed the save for UNCP in the ninth.
