Patriots Pounce on Panthers in Clean Sweep

FERRUM, VA ? Juniors right-side hitter Camryn Faggart and outside hitter Madilyn Gartner orchestrated Francis Marion University's offense in the sweep against Ferrum College (25-18, 25-15, 25-11) in the Swartz Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 1). Gartner led the way with match-high 15 kills, five aces, and six digs, while Faggart kept the tempo with a baker's dozen in kills on a .619 hitting clip and three blocks.

With the win, FMU improves to 18-8 overall and 15-1 in conference play with its eighth straight win, while Ferrum falls to 4-19 and 1-15. This marked the second-ever meeting between the teams and the second straight win for Francis Marion since Ferrum joined Conference Carolinas.

Other standouts for Francis Marion included senior middleblocker Caroline Lucas with eight kills paired with five blocks as well as freshman setter Aubrey Johnson with game-high 36 assists and three aces. Senior libero Katie Floyd directed the defense with team-high 14 digs as well.

A 6-1 run gave the Patriots breathing room in set one, fueled by Johnson, a block from Faggart and freshman middleblocker McKayla Stockwell, a kill by Faggart, and another block from Stockwell and junior outside hitter Allison Miller. Lucas, Miller, Gartner, and Faggart rallied the troops to secure the win of 25-18 thanks to Patriot kills, capitalizing off of Panther errors, and blocks.

Faggart put on a clinic in set two, where she scored four of the five points on a run the Patriots had, making the score 14-5. Johnson, Lucas, Gartner, and Miller banded together to win the set 25-15. Faggart finished the set with seven kills, while Gartner concluded with six.

Four consecutive aces came from Gartner to ignite Francis Marion in set three, making the score 10-4. Patriot blocks, kills from Faggart, Lucas, Miller, and redshirt junior outside hitter Kayla Clayworth sealed the set 25-11 and cemented the sweep.
