#17 Patriots remain perfect with 2-0 victory over Barton

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore midfielder Samantha Bodwell and junior defender Joy Brockmann netted goals on Wednesday evening (Oct. 15) as 17th-ranked Francis Marion University captured a 2-0 shutout win over Barton College in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action.

The Patriots continue their impressive 2025 campaign after improving to 11-0-0 overall with an 8-0-0 mark in conference play. FMU is one of only two NCAA Division II women's programs still unbeaten and untied this season.

Francis Marion returns to Hartzler Field on Saturday (Oct. 18) to face Ferrum College on Senior Day with kickoff set for 4 p.m.

In the first half, both sides battled for possession with zero shots recorded in the initial 15 minutes of the match before FMU forced a corner kick in the 18th minute. After the corner kick was delivered into the box, both freshman defender Laïla Ayup and senior forward Tehya Dave' headed it toward goal before it found the foot of Bodwell, who buried her first collegiate goal for 1-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs saw their lone shot of the game just seconds after the contest resumed, but the ball sailed high over the goal. The Patriots followed with six more shots in the final 20-plus minutes and took the 1-0 lead into halftime. At the break, Francis Marion held a 7-1 edge in shots and a 2-0 lead in corner kicks.

The Patriots fired an early shot on goal to start the second half courtesy of sophomore midfielder Bryn Lahart, which was stopped by a diving Barton keeper at the 51:29 mark. Francis Marion remained the aggressor for the remainder of the contest and was awarded a penalty kick in the 88th minute. Brockmann stepped to the spot and fired a shot past the goalkeeper on the left side of the net for a 2-0 margin.

Junior goalkeeper Erin Grabeel secured her 10th shutout of the season after facing just one shot in 90 minutes of action.  The shutout extended her and the team's school-record scoreless streak to 824:15, including nine consecutive clean sheets.

Francis Marion finished with a significant 16-1 lead in shots and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
