Jada Richards scored a team-high 20 points as Francis Marion University opened conference play 5-0 for the first time in 25 seasons with a 105-60 road victory over Southern Wesleyan University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 4) in Conference Carolinas women's basketball play.
Francis Marion, first among the other school's receiving votes in this week's WBCA Top 25 poll, improves to 10-2 overall. The Patriots play their first home game of the New Year on Wednesday when they entertain Chowan University at 5:30 p.m.
Following Richards, senior
Kennedi Simmons scored 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and handed out five assists, while freshmen point guard
Kiara Croskey registered a career-high 19 points, hauled down eight rebounds, and dished out five assists.
FMU junior
Trinity Adams added 16 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and five steals.
Francis Marion shot a sizzling 58.9 percent from the floor, including 13-of-23 from behind the three-point arc – equaling the third-most three-point makes in program history.
Guard Taylin Smith led Southern Wesleyan (3-9. 0-5) with 15 points.
A three-pointer by Croskey opened the scoring and FMU never trailed. A fast-break three-pointer by Richards swelled the margin to 15-4, and later a lay-in by sophomore
Sydney Turner gave Francis Marion a 21-10 advantage. The Patriots held a 25-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After a pair of free throws by the Warriors to open the second period, FMU scored ten straight points – eight of them from Richards – to go up 35-17. Following four points by SWU, Francis Marion answered with an 11-0 run, taking a 46-21 advantage after a lay-up by junior
Danielle Jackson with 3:38 remaining before halftime. SWU closed the opening half on its own 10-0 run to trim the margin to 49-33 at intermission.
Francis Marion opened the third quarter with a 16-3 spurt that produced a 29-point margin at 65-36. FMU led by as many as 35 in the period, 75-40 on one of three three-pointers by sophomore
MacKenzie Feagin, before settling for 77-43 advantage at the end of the quarter.
A 15-0 run in the final quarter gave FMU its largest lead at 102-52 with two minutes remaining.
