Patriots fall in season opener to UNG

MORROW, GA – First-year Francis Marion University players John Osadolor and Juan Salazar Lopez recorded their initial goals as Patriots, but FMU fell 3-2 loss to University of North Georgia on an 89th-minute goal, Thursday evening(Sept. 5).

The Patriots will stay in Morrow to face 16th-ranked Clayton State University on Saturday (Sept. 7). Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.

North Georgia drew blood first in the ninth minute as forward Maxwell Mitchell placed a shot inside the top-right corner of the goal from just inside the 16-yard line. It was only minutes after the Nighthawks' first goal that the Patriots tied the contest at 1-1.

After an attempt to cross in from Osadolor, the Nighthawks goalkeeper Aleska Lukic looked to clear a goal kick out to his defender before it was intercepted by sophomore midfielder Camilo Salazar and served the ball up just in range of Osadolor. Beating out the UNG goalkeeper, Osadolor was able to slip the ball just past for the equalizing goal.

The score remained knotted at 1-1 for the rest of the first half although Francis Marion had several scoring opportunities.

Mitchell recorded his second goal for North Georgia with 22 minutes left in the second half to go ahead 2-1.

Only 42 seconds later, Salazar Lopez tied the game once again after a series of volleys in the box and a deflection off the crossbar. Senior midfielder Mario Buelga was credited with the assist for FMU's second goal. Salazar barely missed the opportunity to score the leading goal as he received a corner kick, sending the ball a few inches shy of the left post and out of bounds.

The Nighthawks scored the winning goal off a loose ball that was slotted through senior FMU goalkeeper's Alberto Aragoneses Lablanca's legs, with 1:45 remaining.

Francis Marion outshot North Georgia eight to four with five shots landing on frame and two finding the mark. The Patriots also held an advantage in corner kicks, taking seven to the Nighthawks' three.

Aragoneses Lablanca played all 90 minutes in the frame and recorded zero saves, while his counterpart, Lukic, picked up two saves.
