Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Adams’ hot start keys 78-56 FMU win

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore forward Trinity Adams scored 13 of her game-high 23 points in the opening eight minutes and Francis Marion University rolled to a 78-56 home win over Southern Wesleyan University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3) in Conference Carolinas women's basketball play.

Francis Marion wins its ninth consecutive game to improve to 15-5 overall and 10-1 in conference action.  The Patriots will try and extend their home court winning streak to 14 games when they entertain the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The victory was the 950th in the storied history of the Patriot women's basketball program.  FMU stands 13th in wins among NCAA Division II programs.

Adams drained 9-of-14 field goal attempts, including 2-of-3 from behind the three-point arc, and was a perfect 3-of-3 at the foul line in only 24 minutes of action.

FMU senior center Lauryn Taylor scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and in the process surpassed 1,500 career points – the 13th Patriot to reach that plateau.  Junior forward Kiana Lee added nine points, while freshman center Trinity Delaney came off the bench to tally five points and a career-high-equaling 12 rebounds.

Jordan Rice paced SWU (8-13, 5-6) with 11 points, while Shelby Glance and Lexi Greffen chipped in 10 each.

The Patriots trailed only twice in the early going, at 10-9 and 12-11.  After the final deficit, FMU ran off 10 straight points and never trailed again.  Adams scored 13 of FMU's first 16 points.  Senior point guard Aniyah Oliver nailed a three-point to end the first quarter scoring and give FMU its first double-digit lead at 24-14.

Francis Marion led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter, at 30-14 after a three-pointer by Adams.  FMU held a 35-21 halftime advantage

A bucket by Greffen to open the third period got the Warriors to within 35-23, but that would be as close as they would get.  Four straight points stretched the lead to 16, and the margin would grow to 28 (59-31) following two free throws by Delaney with 18 ticks left in the quarter.

A three-point play by Delaney to open the final period gave FMU its largest lead at 62-32.  Twelve of the 14 FMU players scored in the contest.

Francis Marion shot 42.2 percent from the floor, including six made three-pointers, and was 18-of-25 at the free throw stripe.  SWU was held to 37.5 percent shooting from the field and was only 2-of-8 at the foul line.  FMU outrebounded the Warriors 51-32.
