Poston tosses no-no as Patriots split with #14 Wingate

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore left-hander Alyssa Poston tossed a no-hitter as Francis Marion University defeated 14th-ranked Wingate University 2-0, Wednesday evening (Feb. 21) en route to a doubleheader split with the Bulldogs.  Wingate won the second game 2-1 as the Patriots stranded 11 runners on base.

Francis Marion, now 10-3, will host Newberry College for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of Homecoming 2024 festivities.  Admission is free.

Poston (5-0) needed only 84 pitches and faced only three batters over the minimum in winning the opener.  The Patriots committed a pair of fielding errors and Poston hit one batter.  The Hartsville native struck out five and did not issue a walk.

Senior catcher Lauren Smallwood gave Poston all the support she would need with a solo homer over the center field wall leading off the second inning.  Sophomore designated hitter Emma Moberg added an insurance run with an RBI-double in the fourth.

Wingate starter Hail Scott (4-2) took the loss despite only surrendering four hits.  The loss snapped the Bulldogs' 10-game winning streak.

In the nightcap, both teams scored single runs in the second inning.  After the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead, the Patriots plated an unearned run following a two-out error by Wingate (13-4) in the bottom of the frame.

A base-loaded walk plated the go-ahead run in the fifth as the Bulldogs forged ahead 2-1.  FMU had runners on base in every inning, but could not push across the equalizer.

FMU sophomore righty Jenna Walling (5-2) was tagged with the loss.  Wingate relief pitcher Sydney Kale (2-0) picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless innings.

Poston also finished the second contest in relief, retiring all seven batters she faced. Senior first baseman Taylor Watford had two hits for FMU in the second contest, including a lead-off double in the seventh.
