Barth bites Bulldogs in 3-1 win

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore outside hitter Chaney Barth posted her sixth doube-double of the year with 18 kills and 10 digs as Francis Marion University closed out its regular season with a 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17 win over visiting Barton College, Tuesday evening (Nov. 12) in Conference Carolinas volleyball action.
 
Francis Marion, winners of 14 of its last 15 matches, closes the regular season 16-12 overall and second in the East Division standings with a 14-4 mark.
 
The seedings and pairings for the upcoming conference tournament will be announced on Wednesday night.
 
Barth's kill total was only two shy of her career high.  She also served a pair of aces.
 
FMU middle blockers Kaytlin Smart and Caroline Lucas registered 14 and 13 kills respectively, and the two combined for a .411 hitting percentage.  Lucas surpassed 800 career kills during the match and her three blocks gave her 200 for her career.  Smart led the Patriots with four blocks.
 
Junior setter Mya Mendoza directed the Patriot offense with a career-high 50 assists, while also digging up 10 balls.  Senior Kara Walker led Francis Marion with 18 digs, while junior libero Katie Floyd had 16, and junior Andrea Delcher 15.
 
Senior Lily Haaga paced Barton (7-18, 4-13) with 15 kills and a .462 hitting percentage.
 
The Patriots closed the first set on a 9-3 run to win 25-18, and scored the first four points of the second set and never trailed en route to a 25-17 win.
 
Barton rallied late in the third set to claim a 25-23 victory.  In the fourth set, Francis Marion broke a 6-6 deadlock with four straight points and never trailed again.  Barth had five of her kills in the final set.
