FLORENCE, SC – Junior forward
Kristina Syragakis scored a fourth-minute goal and Francis Marion University rode that quick start to a 4-1 Conference Carolinas win over visiting Chowan University, Wednesday (Oct. 16) evening in women's soccer play.
Francis Marion (7-1-3, 6-0-2) is unbeaten in its last nine matches, the program's longest such streak since the 2000 season. FMU will travel to play at Emmanuel University on Saturday (Oct. 19) at 12:30 p.m.
Syragakis tallied her conference-leading 12th goal of the season at 3:32 when she intercepted a goal kick by the Hawks, dribbling in, and was successful on a 15-yard shot.
Patriot freshman forward
Nalani Hunt recorded her first collegiate goal, assisted by Syragakis, in the 32nf minute to up the margin to 2-0. Syragakis served the ball in from the far left side of the box, past Chowan defenders, and off the head of Hunt into the bottom right netting.
The Patriots led 2-0 entering halftime, while holding Chowan (4-7-1, 2-5-1) without a shot in the first 45 minutes. For the match, Francis Marion outshot the Hawks 13-3 and led 3-0 in corner kicks.
FMU junior midfielder
Izzy Ashley picked up her second goal of the season and widened the margin to three goals at the 57:04 minute mark. Syragakis laced a short corner kick to senior defender
JG Garon who then chipped a pass to Ashley, allowing her enough space to head it into the bottom right corner of the goal.
The sequence began with Garon putting a free kick into the penalty area where freshman midfielder
Samantha Bodwell headed the ball toward the Hawks' goal, but keeper Kirsten Petersen denied the opportunity, but it resulted in the corner kick.
In the 77th minute, junior midfielder
Linsey Downey scored on a 24-yard strike to open the Patriots' lead to 4-0. Downey's score was assisted by senior forward
Kiersten Yom.
The final goal of the match was scored by Chowan's Natasha Bailey and assisted by Lily Harrison with 4:05 remaining in the match.
Patriot sophomore goalkeeper
Erin Grabeel made no stops in goal while playing all 90 minutes. Petersen totaled six saves.
