FLORENCE, SC – Graduate student
Juan Aleman scored twice and assisted on two other goals, all in the second half, to help lead Francis Marion University to an 11-1 win over Erskine College, Friday night (Sept. 8) in the opening Conference Carolinas match for both men's teams.
Â
Francis Marion (1-0-1, 1-0-0) will return to Hartzler Field on Sunday at 3 p.m. to play a non-conference match against Palm Beach Atlantic University. That will be a re-match of a second-round contest in the 2019 NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Â
Friday's offensive outburst, which saw nine different Patriots find the back of the netting, was only the fourth time in the 48-year history of the FMU program that the squad has scored in double figures. It marks the second highest scoring output behind only a 17-0 victory over Brewton-Parker College in 1990. The squad's 15 assists on Friday did set a new single-match school record.
Â
Francis Marion outshot the Flying Fleet (0-3-0, 0-1-0) 36-5 and led 11-2 in corner kicks.
Juniors
Felipe Ramos Peralta and
Lukas O'Grady split time in goal for FMU with each playing 45 minutes. O'Grady registered the only two saves which both came in the second half.
Â
Erskine senior goalkeeper Evan Zizek made 10 stops in 60 minutes of playing time, while senior Angel Rodriguez was credited with two saves in 30 minutes in goal.
Â
Senior
Vicente Arratia Veit gave FMU a 1-0 advantage three minutes into the match with a 17-yard shot from the right side of the penalty area. The margin grew to 2-0 at the 26:55 mark when junior
Edorta Cabieces headed in a free kick by sophomore
Martin Juanche Gomez. A through ball from speedy freshman
Camilo Salazar led to a 10-yard scoring shot by junior
Andre Sabino in the 36th minute that upped the advantage to 3-0 at halftime.
Â
Aleman scored the first of his two goals just 4:37 into the second half, a 27-yard blast off a Patriot corner kick. His second score was almost identical to the first and came in the 69th minute.
Â
Other Francis Marion scores came from graduate student
Pedro Crespo (60th minute), senior
Jhancarlo Palma (61st minute), senior
Jose Curvelo (65th minute), junior
Cesar Gomez (74th minute), Sabino (75th minute), and junior
Miguel Bello (84th minute).Â
Â
Palma also ended the match with three assists, while senior
Matias Morales Videla and Curvelo joined Aleman with two assists each.
Â
Erskine tallied its lone score on a rebound shot by freshman Isaac Santiago-Melendez at the 80:54 mark.
Â
For the match, FMU held possession of the ball for 59 percent of the 90 minutes.
