WILSON, NC – After a back-and-forth first half, Francis Marion University senior midfielder Vicente Arratia Veit scored on a 13-yard chip shot in the 52nd minute as the Patriots claimed a 3-2 road victory over Barton College, Saturday evening (Sept. 23) in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action.
 
Despite the cool and rainy conditions, Francis Marion improved to 4-1-2 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 4-0-0.
 
FMU will step out of conference play to host Lenoir-Rhyne University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
 
The Patriots outshot the Bulldogs 11-8, although Barton held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
 
The match-winning score came at 51:49, when senior defender Sebastian Garcia possessed the ball at midway and dribbled toward the Bulldog goal.  He made a short feed to junior Edorta Cabieces who chipped a one-touch pass to Arratia Veit in the penalty area.  As the Barton goalkeeper came charging off his line, Arratia Veit chipped the ball passed him and into the far left corner of the goal.
 
FMU held Barton to only three shots over the final 38 minutes.
 
The opening 45 minutes featured four scores.  FMU grabbed a 1-0 advantage at the 12:05 mark when Cabieces corralled a pass from Arratia Veit and rocketed a shot into the lower right corner of the netting.  Barton responded only 36 seconds later with a goal by Tommy Migliarotti.
 
The Patriots regained the lead at 2-1 in the 20th minute when Garcia headed in a corner kick by midfielder Philipp Worner that was also helped along by Arratia Veit.  The Bulldogs retied the match at 2-2 when they scored on a Luis Weber header off a corner kick in the 24th minute.
 
FMU junior goalkeeper Felipe Ramos Peralta recorded five saves, while Barton's Steingrimur Gunnarsson also made five stops.
