FMU races past Crusaders in fourth, earns 17th straight win

FLORENCE, SC – Senior forward Jasmine Stanley and junior center Lauryn Taylor combined for 49 points and 29 rebounds and Francis Marion University used a 12-0 run to open the fourth quarter to claim a 76-63 Homecoming win over North Greenville University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18) in Conference Carolinas women's basketball play.
 
Francis Marion wins its 17th consecutive game, equaling the third longest streak in program history and extends the third-longest active streak in NCAA Division II women's basketball.  The Patriots improve to 19-6 overall and 17-2 in league action and take sole possession of second place in the conference standings, one game back of the leader.
 
FMU will conclude its regular-season schedule on Wednesday by hosting the University of Mount Olive for Senior Night at 5:30 p.m.
 
Stanley scored a career-high 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting and hauled down 18 rebounds, one shy of that career best.  She also recorded three steals and handed out three assists.  Taylor tallied 24 points and 11 rebounds, and upped her career point total to 1,114.
 
Junior point guard Aniyah Oliver added 11 points and seven assists and freshman forward Trinity Adams chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
 
Junior forward Maliyah Lockett came off the NGU bench to lead the Crusaders (5-19, 5-13) with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The two teams were not separated by more than four points during the opening quarter, which ended tied at 13-13.  The Crusaders took a brief 17-16 advantage early in the second period, but FMU responded with an 11-0 spurt to assume a 27-17 lead after a three-point play by Stanley with 4:36 left before halftime.  Another three-point play by Stanley gave the Patriots their largest lead of the first half, 35-23, but North Greenville tallied the final 10 points before halftime to pull within 35-33.
 
The game remained close throughout the third quarter.  Francis Marion scored the final four points of the period to take a 56-49 advantage.
 
That run continued in the final quarter as the Patriots scored 12 straight to push the margin to 19 points, 68-49, after a third three-point play by Stanley with 5:54 remaining.  The margin reached 20 at 76-56 following two free throws by Stanley with 2:21 left in the contest.  Francis Marion held the Crusaders to 5-of-21 shooting over the final 10 minutes.
 
For the game, Francis Marion connected on 45.6 percent of its field goal attempts and was 10-of-15 at the foul line, while North Greenville shot 36.8 percent from the floor and was 9-of-15 at the charity stripe.
