FLORENCE, SC –  USC Beaufort scored a dozen runs over five frames to defeat Francis Marion University 12-1, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 12) in the opening game of the 2023 Pepsi Invitational Baseball Tournament.
 
The tournament will conclude with three games on Monday.  USCB (2-4) will play Catawba College (3-1) at 11 a.m., followed by Francis Marion (2-3) playing Catawba at 2 p.m. and USCB again at 5 p.m.  Admission to the Griffin Athletic Complex is $10 for adults and $5 for students, with FMU students being admitted free with ID.
 
FMU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when senior right fielder 
Will Hardee reached on a fielder's choice to third base.  He took second on a throwing error when USCB junior right-hander Brandon Blume tried to pick him off first base, and then scored on a two-out RBI-single through the left side by graduate student second baseman 
Tanner Wakefield.
 
USCB answered immediately with three runs in the top of the fourth, and went on to score 12 unanswered runs over the next five innings.
 
Blume (1-0) earned the win as he held the Patriot bats to only one unearned run on three hits over seven innings.  He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
 
FMU senior righty 
Nick Palumbo (0-2) took the loss as he made his first career start as a Patriot.
 
Four different Patriots registered hits: Hardee, Wakefield, and both first baseman 
Cole Teply and shortstop 
Peyton Starkey collected hits in their first collegiate at bats.
 
Catcher Nikko Andre led the Sandsharks with a pair of hits and four runs batted in.
