Second-Half Runs carry Broncos past Patriots

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Fayetteville State University outscored Francis Marion University 30-10 over the final 15 minutes, including a game-closing 7-0 spurt, to earn a 57-52 victory over the Patriots, Tuesday night (Nov. 28) in non-conference men's basketball action.
 
Francis Marion (2-3) will open Conference Carolinas play on Saturday at Chowan University with a 2 p.m. tip-off.
 
Senior Lauryn Taylor led FMU with 17 points, while sophomore forward Trinity Adams scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.  Junior forward Kiana Lee added 13 points.
 
Guard Aniylah Bryant paced FSU (5-1) with 16 points and seven steals.
 
The game-closing run erased a 52-50 FMU advantage that was a product of a three-pointer by Adams with 1:31 left.
 
Francis Marion opened the game with successful three-point attempts by Taylor and Adams and quickly raced to a 9-2 advantage.  A three-pointer by Daziyahna Wilson just before the buzzer put the Broncos on top 13-12 at the end of the quarter.
 
The Patriots scored the opening 14 points of the second period, and held FSU scoreless for nearly eight minutes, while building a 26-13 lead.  The margin was 10 points (29-19) at halftime.
 
The Broncos pulled to within 34-27 early in the third quarter.  Francis Marion responded with an 8-0 spurt, capped by a three-point play by Taylor, that produced a 42-27 score, FMU's largest lead of the night.  Fayetteville State answered with a 19-0 run that carried over into the fourth period and left the Broncos holding a 46-42 lead with 8:13 remaining in the contest.
 
Taylor then scored on a pull-up jump shot and Lee followed with a 15-foot jumper and a three-pointer to put FMU back on top 49-46 with 3:33 left.
 
Francis Marion connected on 36.4 percent of its field goal attempts, including 8-of-21 from three-point territory, and was 12-of-18 at the free throw stripe.   Fayetteville State shot 30.0 percent from the floor, including 3-of-19 from behind the arc, and was also 12-of-18 at the foul line.
