Cobras upend FMU Women in hoops play

HARTSVILLE, SC – Francis Marion University lost to Coker University 75-55 on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 12) to conclude play in the 2023 Conference Carolinas/South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Challenge.
 
Francis Marion (0-2) will continue its season-opening road swing on Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at Newberry College.
 
Senior Lauryn Taylor paced the Patriots with 14 points and nine rebounds.  Freshman point guard Nevaeh Farmer had the best game of her young two-game career with 11 points and seven rebounds.
 
Mya Wasswa led four Coker (1-1) players in double digits with 18 points.
 
FMU connected on 35.3 percent of its field goal attempts and was 17-of-22 at the free throw stripe.  Coker shot 43.5 percent from the field, including 8-of-19 from behind the three-point arc, and was 13-of-21 at the foul line.
 
Taylor registered the game's first bucket, but Coker responded with seven straight points and would never trail again.  The Cobras led 21-8 at the end of the period.  The margin grew to 31-11 three minutes into the second quarter, and Coker would hold a 40-26 advantage at halftime.
 
Francis Marion opened the third period with a 12-2 spurt, capped by a lay-up by sophomore Trinity Adams that trimmed the lead to 42-38.  Coker answered with six straight points and would lead 56-43 heading to the fourth quarter.
