Cabieces’ brace backs stout Patriot defense

FLORENCE, SC – Junior forward Edorta Cabieces came off the bench to score a pair of goals and the conference-leading Francis Marion University defense recorded its fourth shutout as the Patriots blanked Barton College 3-0, Tuesday night (Oct. 17) in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action.

Francis Marion is unbeaten in its last 10 matches equaling the fifth longest streak in program history.  The Patriots improve to 7-1-5 overall and 6-0-3 in conference play.  FMU will play at Young Harris College on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., before returning home for its final home contest on Hartzler Field, Oct. 25 at 3:30 p.m. against local-rival Coker University.

FMU has allowed only 10 goals in its 13 matches.  Junior goalkeeper Felipe Ramos Peralta notched his third clean sheet of the season by recording four saves.  The Patriot defense held the Bulldogs to only six shots over the 90 minutes.

Francis Marion registered eight shots of its own, led by Cabieces with three.  Barton held a slight 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Graduate student midfielder Mario Buelga put FMU up 1-0 at the 10:05 mark when he headed in a service from senior defender Luis Villarreal.  The shot from six yards out just squeaked under the arms of Bulldog goalkeeper Steingrimur Gunnarsson.

Upon entering the contest in the 24th minute, Cabieces immediately made his presence felt. He took a beautiful through ball from senior midfielder Vicente Arratia Veit and quickly dribbled into the box where his shot was stopped on a nice save by Gunnarsson.

Cabieces did double the margin to 2-0 at 31:25 when he headed in a cross by sophomore midfielder Martin Juanche Gomez.

Cabieces also accounted for the lone score in the second half.  Buelga intercepted a failed clearance by the Bulldogs and passed to Cabieces whose 17-yard shot found its way into the left side of the Barton goal at the 50:33 mark.  It was his team-leading seventh goal of the year.

Francis Marion held a 57 percent to 43 percent advantage in time of possession.
