FMU Women’s Soccer defeated by Trojans

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University midfielder Abbey Brosnihan scored her first career goal in the opening two minutes, but the University of Mount Olive responded quickly and ultimately walked away with a 5-1 Conference Carolinas win over the Patriots, Wednesday (Sept. 21) in women's soccer play.
 
The Patriots (1-5-2, 0-3-1) stay home with a match on Saturday against North Greenville University at 4:30 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
 
FMU was outshot 18-7, with three Patriots tries being on target. The Trojans (5-3-0, 3-0-0) registered 12 shots on goal.
 
The FMU score was delivered by defender Courtney DeNoux from outside the 20-yard box that was ultimately finished off by a looping Brosnihan header over the keeper's outstretched arm.  The goal came at the 1:29 mark.
 
Brosnihan and forwards Valentina Restrepo and Kylie Reif led the Patriots with two shots apiece. Forward Jada Pearson added a shot as well.
 
UMO's Delia Allwood netted the Trojans' first goal at 6:29 off a long ball played over the top from the defensive end that led Allwood to a 1-on-1 opportunity with FMU goalkeeper Emily Casey.
 
Maelwenn Gaiffas grabbed the lead for the Trojans after converting a penalty kick in the 29th minute. Tianna Hill added two goals in the second half in the 57th and 76th minutes. Emily Hein added another goal in the 65th minute off a crisp 13-yard shot. Jaslyn Gott assisted on two goals, while Olivia Womack and Riley Baker registered the other assists for Mount Olive.
 
Casey, making her first collegiate appearance, registered five saves in the match, with three coming in the first half and two in the second half. Mount Olive's Nicole Solicito ended the match with one save.
 
The Trojans would be awarded four corner kicks, while the Patriots were awarded three in the match.
