BELMONT, NC – Belmont Abbey College won a hard-fought doubles point and went on to edge 68th-ranked Francis Marion University 5-2, Friday afternoon (April 8) in Conference Carolinas women's tennis action.

The loss snapped a nine-match winning streak for FMU, now 10-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Patriots will play at Converse University on Saturday at noon.

After the Crusaders (10-13, 4-2) won at the No.1 doubles position, FMU sophomore
Julie Martincova and freshman
Kim Venghaus were victorious 6-3 at the No.2 slot. However, Belmont Abbey claimed the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the No.3 spot.

Francis Marion quickly evened the match at 1-1 when freshman
Sophia Hansen registered a 6-1, 6-0 win at No.4 singles. However, the Crusaders took four of the remaining five singles decisions, including two that went beyond two sets.

Paige Wise accounted for the other FMU point, as she remained unbeaten in singles play (10-0) with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory at the No.1 position.
