FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University junior first baseman
Savana Rosson slugged a three-run walk-off homer in a 4-2 game-one win and junior right-handed pitcher
Casey Kurent tossed a four-hit shutout in a 7-0 game-two victory, as the Patriots swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Adelphi University on Wednesday evening (March 2).
Â
Francis Marion improves to 12-9 overall and will play its first-ever Conference Carolinas twinbill on March 8 at the University of Mount Olive. Adelphi drops to 1-5.
Â
Junior righty
Rachel Davis (4-2) got the win in the opener. She allowed only four hits and one earned run with 10 strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
Â
Rosson's one-out drive over the left-center field wall erased a 2-1 Panther lead that had stood for four frames. It followed a lead-off single by senior infielder
Ashtyn Patterson and a one-out walk to senior left fielder
Danielle Karacson. It also made a hard-luck loser of Adelphi starter Lindsey Hibbs (1-2).
Â
Patterson and Karacson both finished with two hits for the Patriots.
Â
FMU took a 1-0 lead after only two batters in the bottom of the first. Â Patterson was hit by a pitch and sophomore right fielder
Katie Smith followed with a run-scoring double to right-center field.
Â
Adelphi knotted the game in the second on a long homer by first baseman Faith Camilleri, and took the lead on an unearned run in the third.
Â
In the second contest, Kurent (5-1) silenced the Adelphi bats on only four hits. She walked three and struck out nine to post her first shutout as a Patriot.
Â
FMU plated two runs in the third when freshman second baseman
Laurin Nodine scampered home on a wild pitch, and later graduate student center fielder
NaJah Gerrald scored on a two-out error.
Â
Freshman designated hitter
Emma Moberg broke the game open in the fifth with a three-run homer to left center. The Patriots added two insurance tallies in the sixth on a two-run double by sophomore catcher
Lauren Smallwood.
Â
Smallwood and Moberg both collected two hits in the second contest. Patterson singled in the sixth to extend her streak of safely reaching base to all 21 games this season.
Â
Adelphi starter Claire Fon (0-3) was tagged with the loss despite allowing only two runs (both unearned) on one hit in four innings of work.
