Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Patriots fly away in third quarter for 55-27 win

DUE WEST, SC – Senior forward Jasmine Stanley recorded her fifth career double-double and second in as many games with 14 points and 12 rebounds as Francis Marion University grabbed a 55-27 win over Erskine College, Saturday afternoon (Dec. 17) in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action.

After a break for the holidays, Francis Marion (4-6, 3-2) will continue its road trip for a non-conference matchup against Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday (Jan. 2) at 1 p.m. in the Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium.

FMU junior center Lauryn Taylor posted 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting and reeled in six rebounds (five offensive), while junior guard Aniyah Oliver added eight points, four assists, and three steals. Stanley earned her 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting.

Junior guard Anzya Cook recorded 11 points, three assists, and five steals for Erskine College (3-6, 1-3).

The Flying Fleet opened the contest with a 5-0 start, but FMU would quickly cut the lead to two points after a senior guard Scarlett Gilmore three-pointer. As Erskine bumped its lead to four, the Patriots responded with a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jada Richards to trail by one at 7-6.

With FMU down by four with 3:15 remaining, the Patriots would end the first quarter with a four-point run to tie things up at 12-12. In that run, Richards and Taylor would each contribute two points respectively.

With FMU down by two with 7:34 remaining in the half, the Patriots took their first lead of the contest and never trailed again. A Stanley layup and Oliver three-pointer propelled the Patriots ahead by three at 19-16. Erskine tied the score back at 19-19, but a layup and free throw for first-year forward Trinity Adams gave FMU a three-point lead going into halftime at 22-19.

After halftime, FMU led 25-21 and then finished the quarter on a 13-0 run to go up by 17 at 38-21. Francis Marion held the Flying Fleet to one bucket in the third quarter, while Taylor and Richards each put up five points in the quarter. The two points equals the fewest ever allowed by the Patriots in a quarter, also set against the Flying Fleet program back in 2017.

Entering the fourth quarter, it was all Francis Marion. Erskine's Cook knocked down a shot from behind the arc to make the score 47-27 with 4:20 remaining in the game, but the Patriots would not allow another point walking away with a 55-27 final.

Francis Marion shot 39.1 percent from the floor, including 5-of-16 from behind the three-point arc, and was 14-of-18 at the charity stripe, while Erskine registered 22.0 percent shooting and was 2-of-4 on free throws.

FMU held a commanding 37-21 edge in rebounding and led 20-0 in second-chance points.
